Music has always been important to the beauty of worship at St. Matthias, beginning with the church planners, who ensured the installation of an excellent Casavant organ, now supplemented by a Yamaha grand piano. Over many years, dedicated music directors and choir members have helped make services memorable, focussing mainly on traditional Anglican church music, as well as initiating or taking part in other musical events in the church, many attracting people from the wider community.
The choir’s most obvious function is to provide sung music and liturgical leadership during public worship. In so doing, the choir has attained a standard both appreciated and admired, under the direction of Dr. Deirdre Piper, a composer and retired professor of music at Carleton University. In addition to spending many hours helping the highly-committed choir members in their expression of church music, Dr. Piper has fostered a collegial, supportive atmosphere among them. In the church hall, a purpose-designed music room with a small upright piano is used for rehearsals, which provide a forum for fellowship as well. At Christmas and Easter, a brass choir has added another dimension to the musical beauty of the services.
